al diciannovesimo piano la Singapore Harbour è
magnifca. Specie al tramonto quando le luci ne
dipingono lo skyline. Qua e la si intravedono ancora le
vestigia coloniali sapientemente restaurate da un governo che
ha saputo metabolizzare il passato coloniale in poco tempo
per poi sfruttarlo sapientemente a fni turistici. Percorrendo
Orchard Road, scrutando nella folta vegetazione di qualche
giardino, oppure indugiando dietro qualche mall, si scoprono le
residenze neoclassiche dei coloni inglesi, ma anche dei mercanti
arabi, indiani, armeni e cinesi che qui si trasferirono non appena
Singapore venne dichiarata porto franco.
Volgendo lo sguardo più vicino, dalle pareti di vetro dell’hotel
si possonoosservare laSingaporeFlyer, una ruotapiù grandedel
London Eye, oppure il campo da calcio galleggiante più grande
del mondo, cosi come il nuovo Artscience Museum realizzato in
forma di fore di loto i cui petali sono le sale espositive.
Note storiche, coloniali e asiatiche si fondono negli interni
del Mandarin Oriental dando vita a un’atmosfera cosmopolita. Il
personalegentilissimo - comeormai è facile trovaresolo inOriente -
segue l’ospite in ogni sua esigenzamettendo subito a proprio agio.
Tra i vari ristoranti il Cherry Garden merita una attenzione
particolare. I suoi interni in uno stile cinese contemporaneo

magnifcent, especially at sunset when the light paints its
skyline. Here and there one still sees the colonial vestiges
– attentively restored by a government which has metabolised
its colonial past in a short time and then wisely exploited
it for tourism. Walking along Orchard Road, observing in
the luxuriant vegetation of some garden or stopping of is a
mall, one discovers the neoclassical residences of the English
colonists, but also those of the Arab, Indian, Armenian and
Chinese merchants who emigrated here as soon as Singapore
was declared a free port.
Observing more near-by, from the glass windows of the
hotel, one can see the Singapore-Flyer - a wheel larger than the
London Eye - or the world’s largest foating soccer feld, together
with the new Artscience Museum, realised in the shape of a
lotus blossom, whose petals are the exhibition rooms.
Historical, colonial and Asian notes fuse in the interiors of the
Mandarin Oriental, giving life to a cosmopolitan atmosphere.
The extremely gracious staf – as can primarily be found only in
the Orient today – care for guests’ every demand, making them
feel perfectly at ease.
