ir Victor Sasson era uno di quei personaggi che pur non
avendo alcun ruolo politico facevano la storia di una città.
Facoltoso banchiere, imprenditore e naturalmente bon
viveur. Al tempo sul Bund ancora imperava il Neoclassico ma
Sasson per la nuova sede delle sue società volle uno stile nuovo
più contemporaneo. L’Art Deco. Nacque così questo edifcio
alto 12 piani e privo di capitelli, colonne e cornici. Imponente
e semplice allo stesso tempo. Una volta
terminato però Sir Sasson decise di
dedicarne solo una parte a ufci per fare
del resto il migliore hotel di Shanghai.
L’internoèunsusseguirsidivetratecolorate,
marmi, sale con sontuosi lampadari. Ma sono
soprattutto gli spazi che colpiscono. Ampi,
articolati, una successione di suggestive
vedute che conducono l’ospite in un hotel
che è un tempiodell’Art Déco. Meta di politici
e artisti il Cathay poi Peace Hotel ha ospitato
Marlene Dietrich, Charlie Chaplin, George
Bernard Shaw fno ai presidenti americani
Carter, Reagan e Clinton.
Un tè nella lobby lounge, una cena al ristorante cinese Dragon
Phoenix o alla Cathay Room al nono piano sono esperienze che
rimangono impresse. Il fume che scorre sotto brulicante di vita con
le chiatte dirette al porto, la Shanghai moderna all’orizzonte che si
staglia sul rosso del tramonto. La secolare vocazione commerciale
della città non si èmai veramente sopita. Dai tempi di Sir Sasson ad
oggi lo spirito di Shanghai non è mutato. Oggi, con il Peace Hotel
restaurato un nuovo tassello di questa tradizione ha trovato il suo
posto.

having any politcal role, made history of his city. A wealthy
banker, entrepreneur and, naturally, man about town. At that
time the Bund was still dominated by Neoclassicism, but Sasson
wanted a newer more contemporary style for the headquarters for
his companies. Art Deco. This is how the building come about, with
its 12 storeyswithcapitals, columns or cornices. Imposingand simple
at the same time. Once fnished, however, Sir
Sasson decided to dedicate only part of it to
ofces and leave the rest for the best hotel in
Shaghai.
The interior is a collection of stained-glass
windows, marble, rooms with sumptuous
chandeliers. But the spaces are what
strike us the most. Ample, articulated, and
succession of impressive views which lead
guests in a hotel which is a temple to Art
Deco. Destination for politicians and artists,
the Cathay - later Peace Hotel - hosted
Marlene Dietrich, Charlie Chaplin, George
Bernard Shaw up to American presidents,
Carter, Reagan and Bill Clinton.
A tea in the lobby or a dinner in the Chinese restaurant, Dragon
Phoenix, or in theCathay roomon theninthfoor areexperiences that
remain with us. The river which fows below bubbles with life with
the rafts headed to the port, modern Shanghai on the horizonwhich
standsout inthe redglareof thesunset. Thecenturies-oldcommercial
vocationof the city has never dieddown. Fromthe times of Sir Sasson
up to today, the spirit of Shanghai rests unchanged. Today with the
PeaceHotel restored, anew tile in this traditionhas found its place.
