n universo intimista in cui bastano i nomi delle suites,
Maugham, Conrad, Greene, Coward, per ricordare che
abbiamo varcato la soglia di un’icona dell’ospitalità non solo
orientale. Il Mandarin Oriental è infatti un vero punto d’incontro
per tutti i viaggiatori che percorrono le strade di Bangkok e
dell’Oriente. L’atmosfera dell’hotel è un invito stesso al viaggio a
partire dalla scoperta del quartiere, con il suo spirito coloniale, in
cui si trova.
La storia ci riporta alla Bangkok del 1876. Fu infatti in quell’anno
che il capitano danese Andersen acquistò il vecchio Oriental
Hotel, le cui origini risalivano al 1850. Pochi anni dopo, il Danese
fece costruire un nuovo e lussuoso edifcio aperto al pubblico il
19 maggio 1887. Il fascino, fn dall’ingresso, di un mondo intriso
di lusso ed esotismo viene incontro all’ospite accolto dall’ampia
lobby. Un rapido passaggio prima di raggiungere la camera con
vista sul Chao Phraya River e la skyline di Bangkok per l’in room
