Un itinerario nella Bangkok meno nota per scoprire le
opere della modernizzazione avviata dagli artisti italiani
alla corte del Siam.
An itinerary around the lesser-known Bangkok to discover
the works of modernization undertaken by Italian artists at
the Court of Siam.
Italians and the Kingdom of Siam
É
qui, nell’orientale Bangkok, che si colgono, attorno al
Regio Parco Dusit, gli stupendi frutti dell’incontro tra
l’Italia e l’Oriente. Una ricchezza artistico-architettonica
eclettica e, in qualche modo, favolosa sviluppatasi in pochi
decenni alla Corte del Siam.
L’incontro tra Bangkok e l’Italia avvenne infatti tra la
fine dell’Ottocento e i primi anni del Novecento grazie
al re del Siam Chulalongkorn (Rama V) che, attratto
dall’Occidente, affidò a Carlo Allegri, il Dipartimento dei
Lavori Pubblici. In tanti ebbero allora per destinazione
Bangkok. Chi per pochi mesi. Chi rimanendovi per sempre,
come lo scultore fiorentino Corrado Feroci (Silpa Bhirasi).
Architetti. Artisti. Imprenditori. Tutti intrapresero la non
breve strada verso il Regno del Siam, divenuto Thailandia
nel 1939, per dare il loro contributo alla modernizzazione
intrapresa dal Re.
Le testimonianze di quell’intensa stagione del made in Italy
disegnano oggi un itinerario capace di far aforare un pezzo
di storia che vale la pena far rivivere. Siamo nel pieno di una
grande stazione crocevia del sud-est asiatico: Hualampong.
Lo stile ricorda subito, seppur in scala ridotta, quella di Torino
Porta Nuova. Un breve tratto in treno, un’esperienza in sé stessa,
permette invece di scorgere le linee più coloniali della piccola
stazione del parco Chitrlada opera, come la precedente, dei
torinesi Mario Tamagno e Alfredo Rigazzi.

t is here, in Oriental Bangkok, that one gathers, around the
Regio Parco Dusit Park, the stupendous fruit of the meeting
between Italy and the Orient. An eclectic artistic-architectural
treasure - in some ways fabulous - which developed in a few
decades in the Kingdom of Siam.
The meeting between Bangkok and Italy occurred, in fact,
between the end of the eighteen hundreds and the frst few
years of the nineteen hundreds, thanks to the King of Siam,
Chulalongkorn (Rama V) who, attracted by the West, entrusted
the Department of Public Works to Carlo Allegri. Thus there
were many whose destination was Bangkok, some for just a few
months and others who remained there permanently, like the
Florentine sculptor Corrado Feroci (Silpa Bhirasi). Architects.
Artists. Entrepreneurs. All undertook the long road towards
the Court of Siam, today Thailand since 1939, to make their
contribution to the modernization undertaken by the King.
The testimony to the renowned season of «»made in Italy»»
today designs an itinerary which highlights a piece of history that
is well worth reliving. We are at the heart of the grand crossroads
of Southeast Asia: Hualampong. The style immediately recalls -
though on amuch smaller scale - that of the Porta Nuova in Turin.
A short train ride - an experience in and of itself - permits one to
observe, instead, the more colonial lines of the little station in the
park of Chitrlada, work - as the previous one - of Mario Tamagno
and Alfredo Rigazzi, both of whom from Turin.
