The waves down below crashing on the
rocks can be heard everywhere. It is
music from the infinite. There is a sense
of freedom in this vision, infinite freedom.

luwato, «la roccia alla fne della terra», è nel sud della
penisola di Nusa Dua. Poco lontano sorge uno dei luoghi
più venerati di Bali, il tempio omonimo, dedicato agli spiriti
guardiani delmare. Nona casovistoche siamosuuna scoglieraalta
un centinaio di metri che cade a strapiombo su unmare cristallino
con quelle grandi onde tanto note ai surfsti di tutto il mondo.
Una zona ancora poco turistica, un paesaggio da savana che
contrasta con le risaie e la natura rigogliosa dell’interno. Il giardino
del resort rifette questo contrasto ponendo a confronto prati
verdissimi, tanti frangipani,qualchepalma, conareelasciatenaturali
con sterpaglie e alberi secchi. Lo stesso contrasto che si percepisce
nell’architettura. Larghe pareti bianche, lisce o intercalate damotivi
geometrici, accostate da sculture in legno ricavate da alberi secchi,
pannelli in legno scuro invecchiati naturalmente, pietra lavica
appena sbozzata a formare composizioni geometriche. Il tutto
contornato da ampie vasche. Come dire materiali locali design
contemporaneo.
Tutto il resort è attorniato da lemon grass, che aiuta tra l’altro
a tenere lontano le zanzare. Già, perché questo è un eco resort
con vari accorgimenti per il riciclo e il contenimento energetico. È

luwatu, the “rock at the end of the Earth”, is in the south of the
Nusa Dua peninsula. A stone’s throwway lies one of themost
venerated places in Bali, the homonymous temple, dedicated
to the guardian spirits of the sea. This is hardly by chance since we
are on a clif a hundred metres high which goes straight down to a
crystalline ocean with huge waves well known to surfers the world
around.
Thisareaisstill littlefrequentedby tourists. Thesavannahlandscape
is in sharp contrast with the rice paddies and the luxuriant vegetation
of the interior. The gardens of the resort refect this diference: very
green lawns, myriad frangipane trees and a few palms and areas
left undisturbed, with bushes and dry trees. The same contrast is
perceived also in the architecture: enormous white walls, smooth or
with alternating geometrical motifs fanked by wooden sculptures
fashioned from dry trees, panels of naturally-aged dark stone,
lavastone slightly carved to produce geometrical compositions. All of
this framedby largebasins. Localmaterials andcontemporarydesign
also characterise the resort.
The entire resort is surrounded by lemon grass, which, if nothing
else, helps to ward of the mosquitoes - logical, as this is an eco-resort
